Emergency physicians

MSF emergency physicians oversee the functioning of the emergency department from patient entry to admission or discharge. Emergency medicine includes treatment of a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries – trauma, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases or vital signs and obstetric complications.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the medical team treating emergency patients.
  • Implementing a triage system using the START (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) method.
  • Implementing training for mass casualty incidents.
  • Ensuring implementation of MSF medical guidelines in line with medical ethics.
  • Ongoing mentoring, training and regular evaluation of the medical team.
  • Supporting the collection and analysis of data and writing regular project reports. 

You will likely be on call 24/7 while on assignment as a key advisor in case of complications.

Requirements

  • Specialization diploma (completed specialization) in anesthesia and intensive care medicine. 
  • At least 1 year of work experience in an emergency department and the ability to act as an emergency medicine specialist OR completed education in general medicine and at least 3 years of work experience in an emergency department.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong knowledge of English.
  • Ability to work on assignment for at least 3 months.

Desirable

  • Up-to-date training on advanced life support protocols: advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), advanced trauma life support (ATLS), advanced pediatric life support (APLS) or advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO).
  • Direct clinical experience in obstetrics-gynecology, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis.
  • Knowledge of tropical medicine or infectious diseases.
  • Work experience in resource-limited settings.
