General practitioners

MSF general practitioners are responsible for diagnosing, treating and performing other medical procedures in hospitals, outpatient clinics and mobile clinics in a variety of settings. These include projects focusing on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, nutrition, neglected diseases such as kala azar and sleeping sickness, as well as providing medical care to people who have been forcibly displaced or communities lacking access to vital healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting hospital rounds and supervising locally hired medical staff.
  • Providing basic medical advice in mobile clinics.
  • Working with very limited diagnostic tools and reference services.
  • Supervising and training locally hired staff.
  • Developing and implementing relevant diagnostic and treatment protocols.
  • Planning and managing the consumption of medicines and medical supplies.
  • Collecting and statistically analyzing data, writing regular project reports.

Requirements

  • Specialization diploma in general practice OR at least three years postgraduate clinical experience, primarily in the areas of infectious diseases, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology and emergency medicine.
  • Ability to take medical responsibility for the whole team in situations where you are the only physician.
  • Strong knowledge of English and possibly French (or other language: Spanish, Russian, Arabic).
  • Ability to work on assignment for a minimum of 6 months.
  • General requirements for all professions also apply.

Desirable

  • Course in tropical medicine (in some regions, knowledge of tropical medicine, public health or infectious diseases is essential).
  • Tropical medicine course may be substituted by clinical experience in resource-limited settings.
