Infectious disease specialists

The role of an infectious disease specialist in MSF varies depending on the specific project, from designing the program to evaluating existing medical activities or conducting the research itself. They are primarily responsible for improving the quality of patient care, starting with diagnosis, treatment and patient adherence to treatment. Working with the local community is an important part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing and evaluating treatment protocols for HIV, TB, hepatitis C and B.
  • Diagnosing, treating and further monitoring of patients with, for example, Kaposi's sarcoma undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Referring patients in need of psychological support to the psychosocial department.
  • Identifying causes of treatment failure.
  • Diagnosing and treating opportunistic infections.
  • Indicating antiretroviral therapy.
  • Conducting regular patient rounds, treating urgent cases and doing emergency work when necessary.
  • Planning and organizing shifts.
  • Conducting ongoing training of the multidisciplinary medical team.
  • Collecting data and analyzing statistics, writing regular project reports.

Requirements

  • Specialization diploma in infectious diseases or pneumology and phthisiology OR completed training in general practice and at least 3 years experience in HIV or (MDR-)TB.
  • Strong knowledge of English.
  • Ability to work on assignment for a minimum of 6 to 12 months.
